In this scene, a Bulgarian student named Insarov, who was eager to emancipate his country under the tyrany of Turkey, came to Venice in order to cross the Adriatic sea to the Bulkan Peninsula along with Eena, a Russian girl, to whom he had just married. But all of his plans were in vain as a premature death waited for them.　The questions ralsed here are：Why was Venice chosen as the location for the final scene of this Russian novel and what kind of role does this scene play in it?　We approach these two questions from 6 points of view.　1) Venice, which was famous for the East Trade and the Crusades, had been closely related to the East. For example, Insarov's hotel stands on the ”Riva degli Schiavoni” (”shore of slavs”). The churches of the Eastern Orthodox and scuolas of Greeks and Slavs are built around Schiavoni.　2) Insarov's hotel is surrounded by three churches, dedicated to St. George, the warrier-saint and matyr, famous for the conquest of Dragon. We must point out that the young Bulgarian has the same first name as St. Demetrius (Dmitrii), also a warrier-saint and matyr, who is often depicted along with St. George.　3) As her nickname ”the city built on water” shows, Venice has many places and things related to water：”Adriatic sea”, ”Riva degli Schiavoni”, ”Canal Grande”, gondoras and so on. Of all these, the most striking is the image of the coffin on water, in which Insarov lies dead.　4) ”On th Eve” is filled with songs and music of several kinds, many of them are gloomy or with negative themes, such as ”death” or ”parting”. In Venice we meet an opera singer with overstrained voice, who plays Violetta (in ”La Traviata”) and a songless Gondlier who carries the depressed heroes along the Grand Canal.　5) In the novel every character is little concerned about ”hic et nunc” (”here and now”). However, there is a great exception in the scene of Venice. Here the hero and the heroine enjoy gondora, pictures, meals and opera, seemingly giving up their usual asceticism.　6) During the scene of Venice, the narrator often stops the story and states his own view. Among them the longest and the most splendid is the speech about Venice. He tells how the beauty of Venice ”touches the soul and moves it to desire”, talking of ”the unutterble fascinations of that magic town”.　This ”magic town” is closely related to almost all of the main themes and motifs in the novel, such as ”the East”, ”water”, ”song”, ”magic”, ”beauty” and ”love and death”.
