To clarify how, we studied the accumulation of rishitin (a phytoalexin) and tomatine (an antifungal saponin) in tomato hypocotyls. Roots of tomato seedlings at the 5th or 6th leaf stage were dipped in 250 ppm of FeCl_2・4H_2O, NH_4Fe (SO_4) ・12H_2O, or (NH_4)_2 Fe (SO_4)_2・6 H_2O. Significantly increased concentrations of rishitin and tomatine (relative to controls) were detected in the hypocotyls at 48 h after treatment. We suggest that the appearance of bacterial wilt is delayed in iron-treated tomato seedlings by phytoalexins and antifungal compounds accumulated in the hypocotyls tissues, the primary site of infection by pathogenic bacteria. Rishitin was also accumulated in potato tubers spray-treated with solutions of each iron compound. This result suggests that the iron compounds elicit phytoalexin production in potato tuber tissues. The degree of activity differed among the iron compounds.
