The result of a survey on da and desu in Meidai Dialogue Corpus shows that a ‘bare’ ending is used significantly more often in plain-style conversation than the one in the polite style. One of the reasons for this is that a ‘bare’ da can be used in a monologue, which desu has no access to. It is also observed that even in a dialogue an utterance with a ‘bare’ ending in the plain style often has characteristics of a monologue in that it is not directed to the hearer.
