内容記述 | This paper aims to clarify how the Ritsu sect prevailed in southern Japan, focusing on Taihei Temple in Satsuma province, Homan Temple in Hyuga province, and Shokoku Temple in Osumi province. In the Middle Ages, though no longer, all belonged to the Ritsu sect and were branch temples of Saidai Temple in Nara. At that time, Satsuma, Hyuga and Osumi provinces, which make up modern Kagoshima prefecture, were ruled by Shimazu clans. The restoration of Taihei Temple began in the late 13th century by Gyoen, a disciple of Eizon, founder of the Ritsu sect. Gyoen succeeded in its reconstruction and it then became one of the Muromachi shogunate’s Rishoto temples. One temple in every province was designated as a Rishoto temple by the Muromachi shogunate. Eiki, who belonged to the Ritsu sect, restored Homan Temple in 1316 with the cooperation of Rensho Ando. It also became a Rishoto temple. Shokoku Temple was reestablished in 1330 by Ensho and later became a branch temple of Saidai Temple, to which Ensho was affiliated. As just illustrated, these three temples were restored by Ritsu monks, after which they became branch temples of Saidai Temple. It is noteworthy that two of them were also Muromachi shogunate’s Rishoto temples. In this way, the Ritsu sect expanded in Satsuma, Hyuga and Osumi provinces. | |||||||
